Trump teases supporters with hint of new presidential race

Donald Trump has said he could run for president again, delighting his supporters during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference – his first public appearance since leaving the White House last month.

The former president sent members of the public to the Cpac event in Florida in raptures with a distinctly combative speech, including much of the rehearsed material he used on the campaign campaign last year.

He has vowed not to divide the Republican Party by creating his own political movement and has suggested he may seek the party’s nomination for president again in 2024.

Trump said: “Biden has failed in his number one duty as chief executive officer of US law enforcement. That alone should be reason enough for Democrats to suffer dire midterm losses and decisively lose the White House four years from now.

Referring to his false claims that last November’s election was rigged, he added: “Actually, as you know, they just lost one of these things.”

And in a comment that drew a standing ovation from the crowd, he said: “But who knows, I might even decide to beat them for the third time.”

Trump has been out of the public eye since January 20, when he left the White House hours before the inauguration of his successor Joe Biden.

Since then, however, his support among Republican activists has shown little sign of weakness. A straw poll at the conference, conducted ahead of Trump’s speech, found he was the most popular potential Republican candidate for 2024, enjoying 55% support among those in attendance. It was far ahead of his closest rival, Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who polled 21%.

However, while 95% of event attendees said they wanted Trump’s policies to continue, far fewer – 68% – said they wanted the former president to run himself again. .
