India Reports Biggest Daily Increase in COVID Cases in Three Months | News on the coronavirus pandemic
Almost 62 percent of infections in the past 24 hours and 46 percent of deaths reported in the western state of Maharashtra.
Daily coronavirus infections in India jumped by 28,903, data from the Ministry of Health showed on Wednesday.
It was the biggest increase since December 13, bringing the national total to 11.44 million. Deaths increased by 188, the highest figure in two months, to 159,044.
India has the highest number of infections in the world after the United States and Brazil.
Almost 62 percent of infections in the past 24 hours and 46 percent of deaths were reported in the western state of Maharashtra, the worst-affected country.
The federal government has blamed overcrowding and a general reluctance to wear masks for the peak, ruling out viral mutations that have been a factor in Western countries.
Maharashtra, home to India’s commercial capital Mumbai, is among states that have already tightened rules to curb the spread of the virus.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will discuss the increased number of cases during a video conference with chief state ministers later Wednesday.
