Amazon delivery drivers may soon assemble furniture and install appliances

Amazon is reportedly preparing to test a service where it supplies and installs both furniture and home appliances for customers. According to Bloomberg, the company plans to introduce the offering first in Virginia and two other markets. It’s worth noting that Amazon already offers scheduled delivery for things like furniture where someone will come to your house and leave the item in a specific room. In some cities, you can also pay for a contractor via Amazon Home Services to get to your home and install your purchase.

As most customers see, the problem is that Amazon doesn’t offer these two services together. It’s something that Wayfair, Best Buy, Home Depot, and all the other companies that offer a combined delivery and installation service have trained people to expect when shopping for big ticket items. With this new offering, Amazon would train drivers to assemble furniture such as mattress sets and install appliances such as washing machines.

Bloomberg reports that some of the company’s current drivers are not thrilled with what the service could mean to them. They fear that Amazon will impose even more Unrealistic expectations on them and provide them with insufficient training. They are also worried about catching COVID-19 at work. In his final letter to shareholders, Jeff Bezos said Amazon needs to “do a better job for our people,” but did not address unrealistic expectations except to say the company is not setting “unreasonable performance targets” . That said, if the report is correct, it would be a critical step in the company’s fight against Wayfair. In 2019, the retailer past Amazon to become the largest online home goods retailer in the United States.
